Hoghton Tower

The ancestral home of the de Hoghton family, Hoghton Tower is a Grade I listed building located in its own grounds, commanding outstanding views over Lancashire, North Wales and the Lake District.

Known as one of the finest Renaissance buildings in England, Hoghton Tower has a rich history dating back to the 16th Century. The Tudor-Elizabethan character of Hoghton Tower has been retained throughout the years and has been kept in its entirety since its re-creation in 1565 by Thomas Hoghton.

Over the years Hoghton Tower has regaled in the presence of numerous royal guests including William III, Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh to name a few. William Shakespeare and Charles Dickens have also been the notable guests of the de Hoghton family.

In 1978 the Hoghton Preservation Trust was established to ensure the continued protection of Hoghton Tower's public wings, garden and to safeguard the surrounding flora and fauna. The Trust is run by a Board of Trustees which are also tasked with encouraging the advancement of historic education and research.

At Hoghton Tower the many attractions available, which are chargeable go a long way to providing the charity with income to reinvest in the renovations required for such a building along with the running and maintenance thereof.
